Roy Keane hits out after what was said about West Ham United
Roy Keane has hit out at Ian Wright after his claim that West Ham will qualify for European football this season.
The Hammers are set for a season without European competition for the first time in three years, having finished ninth in the Premier League in David Moyes’ last season in charge at the London Stadium.
While they did manage to lift the Europa Conference League title in that time, the Irons are set for a new era under Julen Lopetegui’s guidance and have now been tipped to secure European qualification.
Wright staked his claim via The Overlap on Wednesday (14 August), with Keane replying: “You’re obsessed with West Ham.”
West Ham United to secure Europe in Julen Lopetegui’s first season in charge?
Lopetegui and Tim Steidten have been working tirelessly during the summer transfer window to build an incredibly strong squad heading into the new Premier League campaign.
Eyebrows had been raised after the club’s first few pieces of business this summer, signing Luis Guilherme, Max Kilman and Wes Foderingham, but those critics have seemingly disappeared.
Since the beginning of August, Lopetegui has added Crysencio Summerville, Niclas Fullkrug, Guido Rodriguez, Jean-Clair Todibo, and most recently, Aaron Wan-Bissaka to the squad.
For all the criticism, Steidten deserves his flowers for getting these deals done.
There is no reason why this set of players should not be setting their sights on the top-six spots in the Premier League table, with the more optimistic fans wanting a top-four finish this season.
Of course, the Hammers will need time to learn Lopetegui’s tactics, which could see a slow start to the 2024/25 campaign unfold, especially after an indifferent set of pre-season fixtures.
However, there is a positive feeling around the London Stadium after the most recent transfer additions. The Spaniard certainly has a lot to live up to following the end of Moyes’ tenure.
In other West Ham news, the Hammers are set to formally announce the signing of Bradley Dologhan.
