Roshane Thomas: It never worked out for Andriy Yarmolenko at West Ham United

The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas has delivered his verdict on Andriy Yarmolenko after the Ukranian’s departure from the West Ham.

The forward’s departure was confirmed by West Ham after the club released its retained list.

Yarmolenko scored a memorable goal against Sevilla in the Europa League to send the Irons into the quarter-final.

However, Thomas believes the 32-year-old’s time at the London Stadium hasn’t quite worked out.

Thomas tweeted on Friday [27 May]: “Never quite worked out for Yarmolenko but he had special moments against Aston Villa and Sevilla.”

Thomas also responded to the other players released by the Hammers: “[David] Martin had a memorable debut against Chelsea.

“Favourite memory for [Ryan] Fredericks was his performance against Villa away in Lingard’s debut,” he added.

“Wish them well for the future.”

Some great moments

The players that will depart West Ham at the end of their contracts have all had memorable ends to their time at the London Stadium.

Yarmolenko’s goals against Sevilla and Aston Villa will live long in the memory of Irons fans, particularly after the issues that have arisen in his home country.

The 32-year-old has reconnected himself with the Hammers fans and will be remembered fondly after an indifferent time at the London Stadium.

West Ham

Fredericks’ move to the London Stadium hasn’t quite hit the heights that were expected back when he joined in 2018.

The right-back has all the attributes to be a top player but has never really hit the level required at the London Stadium.

News of West Ham’s retained list is the start of a massive summer for the Irons and David Moyes.

Moyes must add quality and depth all over his squad if he wants to turn the Hammers into consistent top-six contenders.
