Rob Newman will begin role as West Ham head of recruitment in September
West Ham have appointed Rob Newman as head of recruitment to help take pressure off David Moyes and David Sullivan, according to The Athletic.
The former Manchester City scout will begin his new role in late September as has been placed on gardening leave by the Premier League champions.
Newman was City’s international scouting and recruitment manager and was involved with first-team recruitment at the Etihad Stadium.
Great move
While fans would prefer to see top players signed right now, landing someone capable of identifying top talents is actually the bigger boost this summer.
We have not been lucky with recruiting for the director of football role, with the last occupant – Mario Husillos – a disaster.
West Ham need to do better in the transfer market going forward, and Newman is the perfect man for the job.
Sullivan should not have any business whatsoever telling the manager who to sign having personally signed Issa Diop and Lukasz Fabianski, and neither should we be relying on agents’ recommendations, with majority of them mainly after their own pockets.
Moyes also needs to fully concentrate on coaching and not get engaged with scouting trips once in a while, and Newman is coming to get that job done.
West Ham have landed someone who played a huge role in making Man City who they are today, and his contacts book and influence among scouts would help boost our chances of getting some of the best players and deals starting from the January transfer window.
