Rishi Sunak impressed by West Ham United loanee Flynn Downes in Southampton verdict
Rishi Sunak has praised West Ham loanee Flynn Downes for his performances at Southampton this season as he shared a new playoff prediction for the Saints.
Sunak, a Southampton fan, insisted he remains hopeful that they will progress through the playoffs and earn a trip to Wembley, with Downes having played a big part in their season.
The Prime Minister also praised James Ward-Prowse after an impressive year for the former Saints man since arriving at the London Stadium last summer.
The Prime Minister was speaking during a visit to a DHL distribution centre [relayed by the Yorkshire Evening Post, 1 May], as he shared: “Flynn Downes has been very good news for us.
“James Ward-Prowse who you poached from us, he’s alright. I’m quietly confident, but you know, play-offs, who knows? I’m hopeful that I get a trip to Wembley at the end of May.”
Rishi Sunak heaps praise on West Ham midfielders
The praise from the Prime Minister for both Hammers midfielders, albeit unexpected, is correct. Not only has Downes stepped up his performances while on loan, but Ward-Prowse has been allowed to shine under David Moyes’ guidance.
Downes has made 32 appearances in the Championship this season since making the switch to St Mary’s, establishing himself as a key part of Russel Martin’s side as they push for promotion, hoping to reach it via the playoffs.
He will likely return to the London Stadium at the end of the season amid plenty of speculation over the managerial position, raising questions about his long-term future and whether another exit may be on the cards.

Ward-Prowse, meanwhile, has dropped off slightly since a lightning start to the season, but his consistency and performances in midfield have been a key part of Moyes’ style both in the Premier League and in Europe.
In other West Ham news, the Hammers have offered double money to secure a new manager.
