Rio Ferdinand questions England boss Gareth Southgate over treatment of West Ham duo Bowen and Ward-Prowse
Rio Ferdinand has questioned Gareth Southgate’s treatment of West Ham duo James Ward-Prowse and Jarrod Bowen in a continued criticism of the England manager.
Ferdinand questioned what more the two Hammers stars have to do to get themselves into the England setup after their stellar start to the season, particularly considering other players that have been called up.
These quotes come following a previous statement from the former West Ham and Manchester United defender calling for Ward-Prowse to retire from international football [Evening Standard, 4 September], as he continues his displeasure at the England boss.

Speaking on his YouTube channel; Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE: the former England international stated: “Ward-Prowse is probably sitting there thinking ‘what else do I have to do’ by the way, to get a call-up, to get in the squad. At least the squad, at least the squad not even starts.
“Bowen scored the winner in the [Europa Conference League] final, has hit the ground running again this season, scoring goals and still don’t even get a call-up.”
Ferdinand continues his criticism
While Ferdinand is right to criticise Southgate for continuing to pick out-of-form players over the likes of Ward-Prowse and Bowen, his view completely lacks any perspective of what this England squad needs. The players both deserve places, but continuity is important.

While the selections of Harry Maguire, Jordan Henderson and Kalvin Phillips are frustrating, particularly when it comes at the expense of players who are performing to a high level, it has to be understood that these players have become fixtures in his side for a reason.
A step back would allow him to realise – Southgate can’t just chop and change his entire squad at the drop of a hat because some players have had a few good games. While Bowen and Ward-Prowse have been impressive, it’s not quite how international football works.
The relative success England have had in recent international tournaments, reaching a semi-final, a final and a quarter-final respectively, is built on a foundation of the squad that continues to remain in selection now. To take out four or five of those players would be unnecessary upheaval.
If the Hammers stars continue their good form, the recognition will come with time.
In other West Ham news, the Hammers will “not be pleased” at the latest transfer rumours.
