Richard Keys reacts to West Ham sack decision on David Moyes after ECL final victory

Richard Keys has praised the West Ham board for not sacking David Moyes during his struggles in the dugout earlier in the season.

The Hammers boss was under immense pressure as his side struggled in the Premier League for many months.

But he has now guided his club to safety and to Europa Conference League success after they defeated Fiorentina 2-1 on Wednesday (7 June).

“What a great night for the Hammers,” Keys wrote on Twitter. “I’m so pleased for David Moyes – a first class man and coach.

“And credit where it’s due to a Board that could’ve panicked during the season and didn’t. I hope everyone is waking up today with a blinding headache.”

Doubters proved wrong

To say Moyes had doubters this season would be an understatement, with many Hammers fans not afraid to admit that they thought his story at the club should have ended long ago.

The Scot had impressed in the dugout at the London Stadium in previous seasons, but all of his hard work looked like it was coming undone as the Hammers were in real danger of dropping down to the Championship at one stage in the campaign.

A fine run of form, however, ensured the East London outfit secured their safety for another season, before the club went on to secure Europa League football after lifting this year’s Europa Conference League trophy.

Moyes deserves immense credit for staying resilient and focusing on the task at hand, with the West Ham board also deserving plenty of credit for sticking by their man, particularly given how the clubs around them in the table were sacking their managers on a regular basis.
