Report: West Ham target Jesse Lingard not interested in being used as a makeweight
Manchester United attacker Jesse Lingard is likely to be against the idea of extending his stay at the club, amid interest from West Ham to sign him permanently.
Hammers insider Claret & Hugh, have reported that Lingard and his representatives are refusing that the player is used as a makeweight in financing any of Man United’s big money summer transfers.
There is understood to be some interest from the Manchester outfit in tying him down to a new contract, but the player is likely to reject any approaches as he has his heart set on an exit.
The report states that the Red Devils are looking to raise £100m from high-profile sales this summer and are expected to get £30m from Lingard’s sale as it’s looking unlikely that they will be able to keep a hold of the England international.
The C&H story says, “The Red Devils commenced talks with agents of some of their players today (Fri) and Jesse’s position is very much one of their priorities. There remains a suggestion United want to offer Lingard a new deal , with just 12 months remaining on his present United contract.
“However, United want a quick answer from his camp or they will push on with a sale in the region of £30m and are looking for talks with his representatives over the next three or four days.
“Sources have also informed ClaretandHugh that his advisers are not entertaining United’s plan for him to be used as a makeweight and have told United as much.”
Can we pull it off?
£30m could prove to be a tad steep given how we’re looking to spend top dollar for a striker in the coming months.
However, signing a striker is just as important as getting the Lingard transfer over the line. It’s because of him why we were realistic contenders for the Champions League and why we eventually finished in the Europa League places.
He’s been a signing that’s not only taken his game to another level but has also made others around him tick.
Ending the season with the second-highest league goals despite being here for only four months tells you just how crucial he’s been to the cause.
