Report: West Ham stalwart nearing retirement decision
Winston Reid’s time at West Ham United, which was once a glorious tenure, has descended into nothing more than frustration and sadness.
He has been injured for almost two years at this point, and has failed to complete 90 minutes in any of the Under-23s games he’s played this season.
It appeared that he was going to secure a move to Major League Soccer last month, but that’s something that has seemingly collapsed.
Now, it appears that the New Zealand international is coming to a crossroads in his career, both at West Ham and in general.
Reliable Hammers news source Claret & Hugh reported on Tuesday that the 31-year-old is soon going to have to make a decision.
The centre back’s contract at the London Stadium runs until 2023, and the report claims that it’s unlikely that he and the club won’t come to an agreement to terminate that deal.
Unless a rapid improvement in his knee injury occurs, the Irons supporters may have seen the last of the long-serving defender in a claret and blue shirt.
Should the club release Reid?
It’s got to be a consideration at this point. It might seem callous, but the Kiwi has simply stopped being an asset.
He’s just a drain on the club’s resources now, because he’s never on the pitch. The fact that there’s seemingly been no improvement in his injury for almost two years now is pretty much a death knoll for him.
This would also allow him the freedom to go and find himself a move to a new club who are prepared to accommodate him.
The Hammers need the money they’d save on Reid’s wages to improve their squad.
In other West Ham news, a former Hammers midfielder has called on the supporters to stop their protests against the board.
