Report - West Ham plot summer swoop for 16 goal 22y/o talent
West Ham are keen on signing AZ Alkmaar captain Teun Koopmeiners, according to Calcio Mercato.
The 22-year-old has hit 16 goals in all competitions for the Dutch side this season from a deep-lying midfield role.
And it is understood that the Hammers have joined the race to land him this summer, with Everton previously touted for a £12 million swoop.
Koopmeiners has also been linked with AC Milan.
Alkmaar were tied on points with reigning champions Ajax at top of the Eredivisie prior to it being cancelled in the wake of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, and it is likely that they will face a battle to keep hold of several of their top talents this summer.
Would Koopmeiners be a good signing for the Hammers?
The signs are certainly promising.
16 goals from the centre of midfield is a seriously impressive tally, even if several have come from the penalty spot, and the 22-year-old has drawn high praise from ex-Hammers boss Alan Pardew too.
Speaking to the Daily Mail recently, he said: “The AZ captain Teun Koopmeiners, a left-footed centre back who can sit in midfield, is probably the best player in Holland in defensive areas”.
Moreover, his pass completion rate of 87.2%, as per Whoscored, is higher than Declan Rice’s this season, and he has also completed more key passes, more regular passes, and has a higher match rating than the Irons favourite.
There are certainly worse options to be considering, and Koopmeiners could prove to be a brilliant coup if David Moyes can land him.
