Report: West Ham leading contenders for £70m-rated top talent

Sunday appears to be the day for any and all transfer rumours surrounding West Ham United, with one particularly ludicrous one emerging.

Whenever a new manager arrives, transfer business is expected to follow as soon as the next window opens.

It certainly seems like the Hammers will be active this month, but whether they will splash the sort of cash they did last summer remains to be seen.

The Daily Express certainly think they will, though, as they reported on Sunday that the Irons have emerged as surprise contenders for Napoli’s world class centre half Kalidou Koulibaly.

They are thought to face serious competition from champions Manchester City, while the Senegal international has been a long-term target for Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, too.

The 28-year-old is widely regarded as one of the best centre backs in world football, and is rated at £70million by the Italian club. He is keen on a move to the Premier League.

The Express’ report claims that the east London outfit are indeed ready to spend big money once again after falling into relegation trouble under former boss Manuel Pellegrini.

West Ham Zone’s View

This just seems hugely unrealistic, doesn’t it?

Look at the other teams linked with Koulibaly. Man City, Chelsea, Tottenham. Which name doesn’t quite fit in there? Yep, West Ham’s.

The Hammers simply aren’t on the level of those teams, financially or competitively. Why would Koulibaly leave a consistent Champions League side like Napoli for a downwards move to the London Stadium?

Moyes and co. may well want to bring the Senegal star to the club, but there’s surely next to no chance that they do.

In other West Ham news, the club are reported to be preparing to make a bid for a midfielder this weekend.
