Report - West Ham keen on Barcelona defender Moussa Wague

West Ham are keen on signing Barcelona full-back Moussa Wague, according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo

The Hammers are in the market for a new full-back, with Pablo Zabaleta set to bring his time with the club to an end at the end of this season.

And it is understood that 21-year-old Senegal international Wague could be on their radar in the coming weeks.

The youngster has failed to make a consistent impact in Spain since signing for Barca two years ago, and spent part of the 2020/21 campaign on loan with French outfit OGC Nice.

And his disappointing run of form for the Catalan giants has reportedly meant that he has been deemed “transferable” this summer.

It is understood that West Ham have subsequently initiated negotiations ahead of a potential swoop.

Barcelona are said to favour a permanent sale as opposed to a loan deal for the player, but would could consider a temporary move with an option-to-buy worth around £14.5 million.

An immediate permanent deal would set the Hammers back around £9 million.

This is certainly an interesting one.

Things may not have worked out for Wague at Barca, but we’re still talking about a 21-year-old, 14-cap international with plenty of potential.

Statistically, he has done okay this season too.

Wague has a higher pass completion rate, higher total action success rate, and makes more dribbles per game than Ryan Fredericks, as per Wyscout.

He’s young, has good pedigree, and could be a sound investment for the future too.

The only real question is whether or not West Ham would feel comfortable enough to go ahead with a permanent transfer straight away.

It would be a risk, but it would save a decent wedge of money, and could prove to be a smart move.
