Report: West Ham in talks over coaching role for ex Hammer
West Ham United manager David Moyes’ return to the club was announced so quickly that he barely had time to put a backroom staff together.
The Scot will need plenty of help if this Hammers team is to fulfil expectations this season, something already made hugely tricky by their woeful form under his predecessor Manuel Pellegrini.
So he could do with adding one or two influential people into his backroom team, and that’s seemingly something he has now begun to do.
Football Insider reported on Saturday that the Irons have opened talks with former midfielder Joe Cole about a coaching role on Moyes’ staff.
The east London outfit are comfortable with the BT Sport pundit working in either a full-time or part-time capacity.
They are convinced that the former England international has a lot to offer their squad, although discussions are at an early stage at present.
West Ham Zone’s View
There’s no doubt that Cole would be incredibly helpful to have around the London Stadium. He has huge experience and has the benefit of having played abroad as well as in England.
Obviously you’d ideally want an experienced number two to back Moyes up, with Cole sprinkling in useful nuggets as and when. But it certainly wouldn’t hurt to have someone like him around the group.
The only sticking point is his media duties with BT Sport, of course, and to what extent he’d be willing to sacrifice those.
In other West Ham news, a Hammers player is reported to be a doubt for Sunday’s clash with Gillingham.
