Report – West Ham first teamer set to miss rest of season after injury blow

West Ham defender Ryan Fredericks could be out of action for the rest of the season, according to Claret & Hugh

The full-back fell awkwardly after a coming together with Manchester City midfielder Rodri during the Hammers’ 2-0 defeat at the Etihad on Wednesday night.

Initially, the extent of the issue was unspecified, but it is understood that a scan today has revealed that Fredericks has broken a bone in his shoulder.

According to the report, a club source told Claret & Hugh: “The Man City player’s shoulder smashed into him at exactly the wrong point.

“It was really really bad luck – a one in a 20,000 chance.

“He will be seeing another expert but it looks certain to need surgery and it’s likely to be months rather than weeks.”

How big a blow is this for West Ham?

It’s definitely not good news, put it that way.

The last thing David Moyes and his players need right now are more issues as they stare down the barrel of a relegation dogfight, and losing Fredericks is definitely a problem.

The player had only just returned from injury, and this was his second Premier League outing since making that comeback.

What he offers on the right hand side, namely pace and stamina, is vital to the five man defence that Moyes seems so keen on employing, and while Pablo Zabaleta is obviously a willing worker, he doesn’t possess the same natural physicality to match Fredericks in that area.

This is a huge blow for the Irons.
