Report: Moyes rejects chance to bring Serie A star to West Ham
It’s seemed to all of us watching that West Ham United have been trying to sign a central midfielder all month long, yet no-one has arrived.
It’s been a real struggle for co-owner David Sullivan to bring outfield recruits to the London Stadium, with the club’s sole signing so far being goalkeeper Darren Randolph.
To be fair, though, it appears that in the latest case it was manager David Moyes who put the kibosh on a potential midfield signing.
Football Insider reported on Saturday that the Hammers boss rejected the chance to bring Sampdoria midfielder Ronaldo Vieira to the club.
The former Leeds United star had been offered to the Scot this month, but Moyes made it clear he didn’t want the £14million-rated 21-year-old.
Bids have gone in for the likes of Genk’s Sander Berge and Stoke City’s Joe Allen, but the Irons have so far failed in their attempts to bring them to east London.
Vieira was seemingly there on a plate, though, but the midfield search will have to go on.
Was this the right decision from Moyes?
It all depends on whether the club is able to bring a different, better, central midfielder to the club this month.
If they can, then happy days, Vieira wasn’t the one. But if not, then this would begin to look like a rather questionable decision from the Hammers boss.
Vieira’s not a bad player, and he’s young enough to get even better, so it’s curious that Moyes didn’t want him. Still, he doubtless had his reasons and so the search goes on.
In other West Ham news, Moyes has demanded more from one struggling Irons star in the months to come.
