Report: Moyes desperately wants centre back at West Ham next season

Although there have been plenty of issues at West Ham United this season, one of the biggest has been the team’s defensive struggles.

The Hammers have largely failed to build up a solid wall in front of goal, while the play of their goalkeepers hasn’t helped either.

We saw that once again on Monday night, where Lukasz Fabianski was largely at fault for all three of Liverpool’s goals in the Reds’ 3-2 win – particularly Mohamed Salah’s strike.

However, the defenders haven’t helped much either. Angelo Ogbonna is having a good campaign, but beyond that… crickets.

It now looks as if manager David Moyes is preparing to address the issue come the summer (provided his team stay up).

Turkish outlet Takvim reported on Wednesday that the Scot ‘especially’ wants to bring Besiktas centre back Domagoj Vida to the club ready for next season.

The Croatian international is thought to be high on the Hammers’ list of priorities for the offseason.

The 30-year-old has enjoyed another productive season to date in Istanbul, playing 29 times and scoring four goals for his club.

Would Vida be a good signing?

Yes, why not? He is proven at European level and is a successful international defender, as well. He helped steer Croatia to a World Cup final in 2018, of course, and looked very good doing so.

In some respects it’s a bit of a surprise that he’s remained at Besiktas for as long as he has, because he always seems to be linked with a move away.

The Turkish media isn’t the most reliable, so take this one with a pinch of salt. However, the Irons do need defensive help and Vida is better than what they already have.

A Vida-Ogbonna partnership would be very solid, allowing Issa Diop to continue his development at a more leisurely rate. Why not?

In other West Ham news, Mark Noble has been singing the praises of one Hammers teammate.
