Reliable source: West Ham on brink of deal for 6’2″ colossus, medical planned

West Ham have made it very clear from very early on in this transfer window that they considered a new goalkeeper to be a key piece of business for them to complete.

The Hammers have struggled between the sticks for much of the first half of the season in part due to an injury to first choice Lukasz Fabianski, and largely due to the disastrous form of understudy Roberto.

While the Pole is nearing a comeback, as per manager David Moyes, the Spaniard was so poor that a replacement is being actively sought this month.

And it would appear that a deal is close.

West Ham

According to reliable source ExWHUemployee, the Hammers are nearing an agreement for Middlesbrough goalkeeper Darren Randolph.

The 6’2″ Republic of Ireland international has played for the Irons before, and it would appear that he is on the brink of making a return to east London.

Writing on his personal Twitter account, Ex said: “Randolph is almost done.

“Fee agreed. Medical happening now.

“Should be done either today or tomorrow.”

This seems like a smart move from the Hammers.

True, it’s not going to set the world alight, and granted, some fans would argue that David Martin has done a decent enough job to warrant keeping his place as second choice, but this is a shrewd piece of business nonetheless.

Roberto has to go, that much is clear. In just eight Premier League appearances he conceded 17 goals, made two mistakes leading directly two goals, and put one in his own net for good measure, as per the league themselves.

Similarly, Martin, for all of his endearing qualities was brought in primarily to be an extra body in training. That’s not a sustainable solution, no matter who much fans have taken to him.

Bringing in Randolph for a little extra insurance makes complete sense, especially because we saw first hand how bad things can get when the man between the sticks just isn’t up to the task.
