Reliable club source: West Ham have no problem doubling wages of star player

The links between West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice and Chelsea failed to disappear across the summer window.

Chelsea never made a move for the England international, but it is clear that he remains a long-term target at Stamford Bridge.

The Sun even reported that the Irons look set to double Rice’s wages to £120,000-a-week in order to keep their star man.

Reliable club source Claret and Hugh have responded to those reports, claiming that the Irons would have no issues doubling Rice’s wages.

They have reported on their website that money isn’t the main threat to the midfielder’s future at the London Stadium.

It is suggested that Rice has serious ambition to win silverware in his career, and that appears far away at West Ham – something that could blow their chances of pinning down his future.

The Hammers have no issue in making Rice their top-earner, but the question is posed whether or not they can match his ambition.

Rice would certainly deserve the wage increase if it was offered to him, given his rise to the top at the London Stadium.

Despite being so young, the midfielder has already earned the captain’s armband and was one of few to stand up and be counted during the struggle last season.

The 21-year-old is averaging 2.3 tackles and interceptions per game according to WhoScored this season – impressive stats in front of the back five.

It will be interesting to see if the Hammers make a move to tie Rice down before January, with Chelsea clearly having the financial power to make their own move.
