Pundit questions West Ham United move for Harry Maguire as David Moyes sack verdict shared

Darren Ambrose has questioned if Manchester United defender Harry Maguire should go to West Ham due to the uncertainty of the future of David Moyes.

The pundit believes the Hammers boss could be forced out early next season if the club do not get off to a good start.

Ambrose added that Maguire needs a stable club at this stage of his career, with the Hammers having seen a £20million bid rejected for the centre-back [David Ornstein, 28 July].

“The problem with David Moyes, with West Ham, they won the Europa Conference League, their first trophy for so many years… there was still talk of West Ham parting ways with David Moyes,” Ambrose said live on talkSPORT. “He has obviously stayed. But if they have a poor start next season, he is going to end up leaving.

“So is that the right move for someone like Maguire to leave Manchester United for West Ham, and then a few months down the line, if it happens, the manager then goes? I think you don’t want that, you want somewhere that is stable.

“It might be West Ham. If he talks to them they might say ‘no, we’re committed to David Moyes, this is the situation.’ I think he just needs to get out of Manchester United.”

Big decision

Manchester United man Maguire certainly has a big decision to make this summer, with the 30-year-old now at a pivotal stage of his career.

His England future is most certainly on the line, with the Red Devils defender perhaps set to miss out on a starting place under Gareth Southgate at the likes of Euro 2024 if he stays at Old Trafford and remains a bit-part player.

At this stage, it seems that Maguire is very much keen to stay in Manchester and fight for his place, even though it looks like Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez are very much the preferred central defensive duo under Erik ten Hag.

Given the presence of the likes of Nayef Aguerd and Kurt Zouma, it remains to be seen if Maguire would even be a regular at West Ham, but given their £20million bid, a starting place is very much on the cards if he was to go there.

In other West Ham news, Moyes has mooted an important first-team role next season for a youngster the club like “a lot.”
