Phil McNulty left stunned by what ‘Outstanding’ Jarrod Bowen did for West Ham United this season

BBC Sports chief Phil McNulty was left stunned by Jarrod Bowen’s “outstanding” West Ham United goal against Brighton on 26 August as he detailed his favourite goal of the Premier League season so far.

The England international helped West Ham claim an impressive away 3-1 victory at the Amex Stadium, scoring the second goal with a sublime first touch and finish before setting up Michail Antonio for the third.

Speaking on his BBC live Q&A (4 September, 10:17am), he picked out his best goal of the season so far which was handed to Brighton forward Kaoru Mitoma after his individual effort against Wolves, but could hold back his praise of Bowen’s goal against the Seagulls.

West Ham

McNulty said: “I am not a Brighton supporter but I am huge fan of everything they do.

“Jarrod Bowen’s goal against them for West Ham United was outstanding for his first touch alone never mind the finish but I am going to go for one Brighton scored – namely Kaoru Mitoma’s brilliant individual effort against Wolves.”

Sensational start

Both West Ham United and Bowen have enjoyed sensational starts to the Premier League campaign so far, sitting pretty in fourth place in the table, with 10 points from a possible 12 on offer.

Much of the Hammers’ blistering form to begin the campaign has been down to the brilliance of Bowen who has surged his way to become one of the league’s leading scorers with three goals already, and that goal against Brighton on 26 August was a majestic strike.

West Ham

He continued his hot streak against Luton on Friday (1 September) showing just why he will be West Ham United’s greatest asset this season, especially after Declan Rice’s departure.

What looked like a difficult summer for the club over a year ago has now turned into a brilliant one as David Moyes and his recruitment staff managed to get some impressive transfer business done, and also setting the Premier League alight with their early season form, but it’s been Moyes’ tried and trusted players that have impressed including Bowen and defender Kurt Zouma.

Long may it continue. The question is, can the Hammers continue this form after the international break? It’s certainly come at the wrong time for Moyes and his men.

In other West Ham news, one London Stadium target could have cost around just £15m had the Hammers made a last-ditch attempt to sign him.
