Peter Drury thrilled by Alphonse Areola in Manchester City win
West Ham keeper Alphonse Areola impressed Peter Drury on Wednesday night in the Carabao Cup win against Manchester City.
Starting in place of Lukasz Fabianski, the Hammers loanee kept a clean sheet during regulation time to ensure that the game goes to penalties.
While he did not make a save in the shootout, he still ended up winning it 5-3 and deserves the plaudits that came his way for making seven saves on the night.
Speaking on commentary for the EFL world feed, Drury, a BT Sport man, said, “Areola’s made some remarkable saves tonight.
“Superb reactions from the West Ham keeper and he’s kept his side in the game.”
What a fine outing
Areola’s struggled for game time since joining the club on loan in the summer.
David Moyes has opted to go with Lukasz Fabianski as his first-choice goalkeeper as the Pole has been a reliable custodian for him since he’s been the Hammers boss.
However, even he would’ve been in awe looking at Areola’s performances and could be pondering whether he deserves to start ahead of Fabianski in the league as well.
It’s a welcome selection dilemma to have but we won’t be surprised if Areola soon starts in more Premier League games.
Fabianski’s in the last year of his contract and the club may not look to give him an extension if Areola continues to perform at such a high level.
It’s still been a handful of appearances, but we’ve been thoroughly impressed by what we’ve seen of the on loan PSG goalkeeper.
