‘No doubt’ – Terry Westley delivers verdict on whether West Ham will beat drop or not
West Ham face a nervy second half of the season if things don’t turn around soon.
The Hammers have been woeful for the vast majority of the first half of the campaign, and the task has now fallen to David Moyes to pick up the pieces and ensure that the club don’t drop out of the top flight for the first time since 2011.
The Scot has been here before, of course, but things feel a little different this time around.
Gone is the interim status that characterised his first spell, and instead a shiny new 18 month deal has been put on the table for him.
In fact, you get the impression that this is Mr. Gold and Mr. Sullivan admitting that they might have got things wrong a little when they gave Moyes the shove last time.
Whatever the reality of the situation though, the big question and most pressing issue facing West Ham is one of relegation.
But according to former Hammers academy manager Terry Westley, who worked with Moyes during his last spell in east London, there is nothing to worry about.
Speaking to Claret & Hugh, he said: “I have worked with him and he’s the most meticulous guy I have ever seen in the job. At this stage he is the correct choice for me.
“No [they won’t get relegated], not in my book. David Moyes may not excite but he will keep them up.
“I have no doubt about that.”
This is a very definite statement for Westley to make, but he may have a point.
Moyes averaged 1.19 points per game in his last stint at West Ham, as per Transfermarkt.
If he can repeat that over the next 19 games, he would earn around 23 points. That would take the Hammers to a total of 42 points for the campaign, and only once in the Premier League era has that tally not been enough to avoid the drop, as per the league themselves.
Moyes doesn’t have to set the world alight, just tick along nicely, and the Hammers should be okay.
