Niclas Fullkrug to return to West Ham United as new injury update emerges
West Ham United sources have suggested Niclas Fullkrug will return to the UK after picking up an injury on international duty, according to Sean Whetstone.
Whetstone reported via the West Ham Football X account (9 September) that the German forward has picked up an Achilles’ tendon injury and will therefore not play against the Netherlands on Tuesday 10 September.
Fullkrug will be treated by the Hammers with sources and it isn’t yet clear quite how severe the injury is or whether or not he could feature against Fulham on Saturday (14 September).
The 31-year-old striker was spotted leaving Germany’s training session after just 15 minutes with what was thought to be an Achilles and calf problem [Kerry Hau, 9 September].
How bad is Niclas Fullkrug’s injury at West Ham United?
The curse of the international break has struck West Ham again.
Just when the Irons thought they had finally got their hands on a new number nine, he has seemingly been struck down while not even under their supervision.
While it is still unclear just how severe Fullkrug’s injury is, the fact that he left training so abruptly and won’t play any part in Germany’s clash with the Netherlands would suggest that it certainly isn’t a minor issue.
Supporters shouldn’t read too much into the fact that the 31-year-old is jetting back to the UK however as the forward would have likely returned to East London almost immediately after Tuesday night’s clash even if he wasn’t injured.
Hopefully, once the West Ham medical team get their hands on the German and assess his situation, there should be a clearer update from within the club of just how long the striker could be ruled out for.
At least the Irons have both Danny Ings and Michail Antonio waiting in the wings to lead the line against Fulham. Neither forward is perfect, but it does mean that they won’t have to rush Fullkrug back unnecessarily.
