National media blasts West Ham United man Tomas Soucek in 3/10 performance, ‘he didn’t wake up’

The national media in Czechia have laid into West Ham United’s Tomas Soucek after a poor performance in his nation’s 4-1 defeat by Georgia.

The midfielder – along with Hammers teammate Vladimir Coufal – played the full 90 minutes in Tbilisi as the buoyant Georgian side flattened the Czechs throughout.

As a result, the side sit at the foot of their UEFA Nations League table after the opening round of group fixtures, and will host Ukraine in Prague on Tuesday.

Czech website iSport.cz [7 September] blasted Soucek’s display with a dismal 3/10 score, and reasoned: “Alex Král’s entry into the lineup should have freed his legs up front. But he did not get into the game at all, the centre of the field did not work for the Czech team. He didn’t wake up even after the break.”

West Ham man Tomas Soucek disappoints on international stage

On a weekend when Irons players including Niclas Fullkrug and Lucas Paqueta shone for their nations, Soucek and compatriot Vladimir Coufal suffered a bitter night in the Caucasus.

The 29-year-old will know better than to put in a shift like he did, anonymous in the middle of the park against Georgia’s man-of-the-match, Giorgi Chakvetadze – of Championship side Watford.

If Soucek plays against Ukraine this week he will reach 74 senior caps, an excellent accumulation for a player still south of 30, but the frustration with the towering midfielder is his obvious capabilities.

The inconsistency of Soucek gives him something of a sibling relationship with fans at the London Stadium, and seemingly the locals in his homeland who know what he can do on his day, in both boxes and everywhere in between.

Unlike Coufal, Soucek has a little more time on his side and has a contract with the club until 2027, enabling him to prove he can be a vital cog in Julen Lopetegui’s new-look squad.
