National journo: Ex-West Ham ace set to join Moyes’ coaching staff
West Ham are set to appoint former captain Kevin Nolan to David Moyes’ coaching staff, according to the reliable journalist Jacob Steinberg.
The 37-year-old has been out of work since leaving his post as Notts County manager in 2017, but could be in line for a return to east London after leaving the Hammers five years ago.
Steinberg, who writes for The Guardian, shared the news via his personal Twitter account on Wednesday evening.
The Hammers have been linked with moves like this for other ex-players in recent times too, with Football Insider reporting that the club were in talks with Joe Cole at the beginning of last month.
Would this be a good move for the Hammers?
If they can get a deal to bring Nolan back to the club over the line, then absolutely.
The former skipper was a popular figure in east London, and his arrival could be positive for couple of reasons.
Firstly, with things looking as dour as they are for the Irons right now, having a former club favourite around the place could prove to be a timely morale boost for players and fans alike.
Secondly, and more importantly, Nolan has good experience of coaching.
Admittedly, Notts County wasn’t exactly the highest standard in the world, but his spell with the club, coupled with a stint as Leyton Orient Boss means that he has 99 games in the dugout to his name.
You’d struggle to find too many other 37 year-olds with that record, and struggle even more to find any who could bring Nolan’s same knowledge of the club and hunger for success.
This would be a smart move.
