Moyes shares the West Ham team news ahead of Leeds United clash
David Moyes has given the latest West Ham team news ahead of this weekend’s showdown with Leeds United.
The Hammers prepare to face Leeds for the second time in only a week and will hope to repeat last week’s success, winning 2-0 in the FA Cup.
Moyes’ side currently sit fourth in the table but have injuries and covid cases to deal with amongst heavy fixture congestion which might put extra strain on this overachieving squad.
“When you play Sunday-Wednesday-Sunday you’re always liable to pick up injuries with the schedule.” Moyes said in his pre-Leeds United press conference.
“We have one or two knocks that we need to assess.
“Kurt is on his way back and has started back in training, but all the clubs have got situations, whether it’s injuries or COVID, and we have to deal with it as best we can.
“I don’t want to be specific on who’s got COVID and who has injuries, but you’re right we had Tomáš Souček and Mark Noble out on Wednesday, but we’re hopeful we might get one of them back.
“We’ve also had some other players who have had COVID, like all the clubs we have injuries and COVID and are trying to work through it.”
Plug the gap
These are extremely tough times for West Ham and Moyes. The Hammers don’t have the best squad depth by any means and the lottery-like state that football finds itself in, in terms of player fitness, makes it that much more challenging.
One huge slice of good news is Zouma being back in training, as he edges closer to a return in defence.
With four wins in their last four Premier League games, firing the Irons into the Champions league places, they will be ready to take on anyone. A few absentees will not stop the relentless form this team finds themselves in.
With that being said, it isn’t ideal that Moyes is missing both of West Ham’s obvious partners for Declan Rice in midfield.
Soucek is a big miss for the team, his presence in midfield has been key to the Hammers success and the midfield battle might be made that much harder with the absence of veteran, Noble.
Whoever comes in as a replacement needs to be on their game defensively with Leeds’ all-out attack brand of football. Hopefully either Noble or Soucek are fit enough to return against the Whites.
