Monday answer hopeful as Kalvin Phillips transfer update emerges at West Ham United

West Ham are hopeful they will know the outcome of Kalvin Phillips’ future later on Monday 22 January following a “dogged” pursuit of the midfielder, according to Mail Plus.

The newspaper reported via its newsletter [22 January] that the Hammers are expecting to know where they stand on the Manchester City outcast at the end of play on Monday, with the midfielder having been on David Moyes’ wishlist for a long time.

It is understood that the likes of Juventus, Newcastle United, Crystal Palace and Fulham are all keeping tabs on the 28-year-old, who has made just 31 appearances since arriving at Etihad Stadium in July 2022.

Dying to know

With so many clubs interested in taking Phillips on loan, and Man City’s transparency on wanting the player to depart, it is understandable that West Ham want to know the outcome of their chase as soon as possible.

Phillips could be a fantastic addition to Moyes’ midfield, creating a fierce partnership with Edson Alvarez in front of the back four. However, with the loan deal expected to cost around £5million plus wages, West Ham could definitely choose a cheaper player if they found one.

Injuries are rarely a worry when it comes to the former Leeds United man, but considering his extreme lack of game time since leaving Elland Road two summers ago, West Ham will need to get the player match fit very quickly.

Due to the Hammers’ brilliant start to the season, they are in contention for the top four in the Premier League and have a good shot at Europa League success. Phillips could play a vital role in helping achieve these goals.

And for what he will potentially cost the club, West Ham fans will be hoping he can be better than average. We are all aware of his talents, hence his 31 appearances for England since making his debut in 2020. But for whatever reason, it just has not worked out under Pep Guardiola.
