Mick McCarthy hits back at ‘nonsense’ McCoist claim after West Ham win v Wolves

Mick McCarthy hit back at Ally McCoist over his claims regarding the penalty decision against West Ham United in the 2-1 win against Wolves.

Julen Lopetegui secured his position in East London for the time being with a monumental victory against Wolves at the London Stadium on Monday evening [9 December].

However, the visitors could have snatched a share of the spoils as Emerson brought down Goncalo Guedes in the second half, and VAR ruled out the penalty claim.

McCoist asked McCarthy whether he believes decisions balance out throughout the season live on talkSPORT [10 December, 8:11am], with the former Wolves boss claiming that theory is “complete nonsense”.

He said: “Both you and I know those decisions even each other out over the course of the season is complete nonsense.”

VAR decision saves West Ham United v Wolves

Lopetegui has survived by the skin of his teeth at West Ham, but the match at the London Stadium was not without controversy.

Emerson clearly went into the back of Guedes as he entered the Hammers penalty area, and for some unknown reason, VAR officials Andy Madley and Steve Meredith saw no infringement by the Brazilian.

Furthermore, claims have emerged that Jarrod Bowen should have seen his 72nd-minute match-winner disallowed ruled out, as Konstantinos Mavropanos appeared to foul Santiago Bueno in the build-up to what is undoubtedly the most important goal scored for the Lopetegui era.

Tensions for the ‘El Sackico’ also reached boiling point after the final whistle as an altercation between Bowen and Mario Lemina made for unsavoury scenes at the London Stadium in what should have been a joyous occasion for the hosts.

Regardless, sometimes all it takes to get over the line in football is for the decisions to go your way, and that was certainly the case for West Ham.

Lopetegui, of course, is not out of the woods in East London just yet, but the victory on Monday is the perfect starting point for building some much-needed momentum heading into the New Year.
