Michail Antonio update emerges with West Ham United squad reveal

West Ham United squad members have met Michail Antonio after his road traffic accident, according to the Daily Mail.

The news outlet reports [12 December] that senior players at the Hammers have been to visit the striker at hospital following his car crash incident on 7 December.

Ahead of the Irons’ 2-1 win over Wolves on Monday [9 December], the Jamaican face-timed his teammates and shared jokes before watching them get a victory at the London Stadium.

It remains to be seen how long the 34-year-old will be out of action, with Jim White on talkSPORT [9 December] suggesting that it could take up to 12 months before any assessment can be made.

Michail Antonio injury a big blow for West Ham United

Antonio has been front and centre of the Hammers’ attack despite many not expecting to have a significant role at the start of the season.

Julen Lopetegui’s squad was revamped in the previous transfer window, with several quality players being signed, including Niclas Fullkrug.

With the German’s arrival, the Jamaica international’s role in the starting lineup seemed to be under threat, but the Spanish head coach has had to rely on the 34-year-old due to the former Borussia Dortmund striker’s fitness issues.

Antonio played every game in the Premier League for West Ham before the Wolves match, scoring one goal and providing an assist. The centre-forward’s contract expires at the end of the season, so it remains to be seen how his future unfolds.

While the centre-forward hasn’t consistently scored goals in recent years, his tenacity and work rate up front have been essential to the Hammers’ performance.

With the Jamaican sidelined for now and Fullkrug’s situation uncertain, the Irons must sign reinforcements in January to bolster their attack.
