Michael Owen predicts the result of West Ham clash against Southampton

Michael Owen has tipped West Ham to secure a 2-1 win over Southampton at the London Stadium on Boxing Day in his BetVictor column.

The Hammers have struggled in recent games, winning just twice in the their last nine games in all competitions, but they will fancy their chances against a Saints side failing to impress.

Owen believes David Moyes’ men have what it takes to pick up all three points after they got much-needed rest last weekend after their Norwich City clash was postponed.

West Ham

He said: “West Ham have also had a short break in the Premier League, and recently had a couple of disappointing results, most notably the defeat to Arsenal, where they didn’t really turn up. Still, they are in the top four race and a week or so off should recharge the batteries.

“Southampton haven’t won since the start of November and the mood around the squad can’t be good. They’ve blown leads to Leicester, Brighton and Crystal Palace in that time and the pressure is mounting.

“They are well-coached and always stay in games, but I’ve worried about the quality in this side all season.

“I can see West Ham getting back to winning ways here. 2-1 to the Hammers.”

Possibly

The Irons have two wins in their last seven Premier League games, losing thrice, and that has not done their top-four aspirations any good.

However, a win on Sunday will get their campaign back on track, and they will be giving it their all in front of their fans.

Michail Antonio could miss the game due to covid-19, and that could actually be good news.

The Jamaican international striker is without a goal in his last eight league appearances, and taking him out of the firing line could help the West Ham attack.

West Ham

Southampton will be looking to spring a surprise, and they are perfectly capable of doing so on their day.

The Hammers will not have it easy despite being favourites to win, and given their record against teams below them in the table this term, it would not be shocking should they fail to win.

They were held to a goalless draw by the Saints when both sides first met in September, and the likes of Brentford, Wolves, Brighton and Burnley have also taken points off them so far in 2021-22.
