Michael Carrick contacted by intermediary already over West Ham United job

An intermediary has already made contact with Michael Carrick over the possibility of becoming the new manager of West Ham, according to West Ham Football.

The account run by Sean Whetstone posted on Twitter on Monday (11 December) that the Middlesbrough manager has already been approached to discover whether or not he would be interested in taking over at the London Stadium next summer.

David Moyes has remained in charge following the Irons’ 5-0 defeat to Fulham on Sunday 10 December, but the Scotsman’s contract expires at the end of the season, with Carrick an option should that contract not be extended.

David Sullivan and Karren Brady are reported to be expected to review Moyes’ position closer to the end of the season, with a reluctance to sack the Scotsman before the end of his current contract [The Athletic, 7 December].

Unproven

If West Ham United do opt to change their manager, it has always been unlikely that the Hammers were going to appoint another experienced head after Moyes, with the suggestion that they would like to move towards a younger, more progressive head.

While that could bring with it a more exciting, attacking brand of football, it does also represent a risk, especially considering that Carrick has never managed in the Premier League, barring a stint as Manchester United’s caretaker boss.

West Ham

He has done a reasonable job at Middlesbrough over the last couple of years and his team are excellent to watch, but there is absolutely no guarantee that he would be able to transfer those skills to the top flight and the London Stadium.

Whether or not the Irons have or will make an approach for Carrick, it does appear as though Moyes’ days at West Ham may be numbered, with all suggestions being that the Irons will opt to part company with the Scotsman at the end of the season.

It’s hard to predict whether that will be the correct call or not and much will depend on who takes over and how they take to life in East London.
