Mexican media rave over ‘dangerous’ Edson Alvarez as West Ham star shines v Germany

Mexican media have raved over Edson Alvarez’s international display after the West Ham midfielder shined in a 2-2 friendly against Germany.

Alvarez played the full 90 minutes at the Lincoln Financial Field on Tuesday (18 October), with Mexico equalising in the 37th minute before going ahead just after halftime. While Niclas Fullkrug’s equaliser forced the draw, Mexican media were left impressed by his display.

While ESPN claimed (17 October) that defensive errors “doomed” chances of a win, Alvarez was praised for his astute attacking output and his strength in the midfield.

La Presna wrote (18 October) that Alvarez was a danger to the German net, stating: “Before the first five minutes of the game were up, there were dangerous plays on both goals. Mexican Edson Alvarez took a frontal shot that was stopped by goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.”

Reforma wrote (17 October) that the Hammers ace “did not back down” and praised Alvarez for his marking of Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger.

ESPN was impressed with his partnership with Monterrey player Luis Romo, noting: “In double pivot work together with Romo, the midfielder attended to his defensive work against Jamal Musiala and Ilkay Gundogan in a notable way.

“But the main area in which he was noticed was in the distribution of the ball to open spaces in the lines of the rival and benefit the forwards.”

Mexico were strong in their display against the Germans. While the former World Cup champions are nowhere near as strong as in previous years, they can still boast a handful of world-class talent, so Mexico’s display should not be taken lightly.

West Ham

The media praised his bravery and impeccable distribution, showing that he had taken his West Ham form with him on international duty. West Ham fans will be happy to see their midfield maestro escape the break without an injury, but Alvarez’s confidence boost will be needed for their tough Premier League return against Aston Villa.

Per SofaScore, Alvarez earned 91 per cent pass accuracy, five successful long balls, two clearances, two interceptions and one successful dribble, showing his influence up and down the pitch.

While his West Ham teammate Mohammed Kudus had a disappointing showdown against the United States, David Moyes will be impressed by what Alvarez accomplished during the break.
