Met Police share update on West Ham United fans in Germany after loss v Bayer Leverkusen

The Met Police have thanked West Ham United fans for their behaviour away from home at Bayer Leverkusen despite a 2-0 loss in the Europa League.

It was certainly a frustrating night for those following the Hammers in Europe as the home side dominated from start to finish.

With David Moyes setting up in a defensive formation, they were always going to see less of the ball and eventually, they were made to pay.

The frustration could have led to disorderly behaviour in and around the Bay Arena but Met Police have taken to X on 12 April to thank the supporters.

They said: “Fantastic support from West Ham fans. No issues reported over the three days. Safe travels back to wherever you are headed. See you on Sunday.”

How did West Ham United perform v Bayer Leverkusen?

Aaron Cresswell came in and played as a third centre-back in a measure to deal with the attacking force of Xabi Alonso’s side.

This didn’t appear to make much of a difference as the home side managed to keep 73 per cent possession and get 33 shots off at the Hammers’ goal [FotMob].

Despite the best efforts of Lukasz Fabianski who, according to FotMob, registered nine saves but will be frustrated to concede four after that.

The frustration of West Ham fans came with the lack of possession and the fact their side had just one shot across the whole 90 minutes.

Mohamed Kudus’ effort from the edge of the box went straight down the throat of Matej Kovar who collected with ease. This was as good as it got.

Playing defensively may have been a tactic to take something back to the London Stadium next week (18 April). They are 2-0 down and will require at least three goals to get through to the Europa League semi-final without a penalty shootout.
