Medical on Thursday for West Ham United exit as Conor Coventry closes on Charlton Athletic transfer

West Ham United midfielder Conor Coventry is closing in on a move to Charlton Athletic with his medical happening today, according to Natasha Everitt.

The talkSPORT sports writer tweeted on Thursday (11 January) that the 23-year-old is set to complete a medical with the League One side today as he brings an end to his time at the London Stadium with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.

Coventry hasn’t featured for the Hammers this season in any competition and has struggled for consistent game time since returning from a loan spell with Rotherham United in the Championship last season.

Move him on

West Ham need to free up their wage bill to add to their squad during the January transfer window and a big part of that is getting rid of players who are no longer required to get their wages off of the bill at the London Stadium.

While Coventry has always been highly thought of in the Hammers squad, it has become quite clear that he isn’t ready to play a regular role in David Moyes’ squad and he has slipped down the pecking order in the last couple of campaigns.

At 23, it is quite clear that he is unlikely to make the grade as a regular starter in claret and blue and it is best for all parties involved if he moves away from the London Stadium and starts a fresh at a lower level where he’ll play every week.

Hopefully, this will be the first of a few outgoings in the next few days so that Moyes will finally be able to add to his squad during the January transfer window.

The current injury situation in the Hammers squad has made reinforcement necessary and West Ham cannot miss their opportunity to strengthen.
