Medical on Sunday as West Ham United to payment boost coffers at Arsenal

West Ham United target Konstantinos Mavropanos is set to undergo his medical at the London Stadium on Sunday, according to the Mail on Sunday.

The newspaper reported in their print edition on Sunday (20 August, page 105) that the 25-year-old is getting closer to joining the Irons in a deal worth £19m and will complete his medical tests in the next 24 hours.

Mavropanos’s move to East London from Stuttgart will also see Premier League rivals Arsenal receive a healthy sell-on fee after the Greece international defender joined the German side from the Gunners in 2022.

Discussing the state of the deal, the Mail on Sunday wrote: “West Ham have agreed a £19m deal for Stuttgart defender Konstantinos Mavropanos who is expected to have a medical today.

“The 25-year-old’s move will also see his former club Arsenal receive a percentage sell-on. West Ham are expected to return with an improved offer for Mohammed Kudus after Ajax rejected their opening offer.”

Defensive reinforcements

New defensive options have been on David Moyes’ shopping list for a majority of the summer transfer window and it looks as though both he and the Irons are finally closing in on reinforcing their backline.

The pursuit of Harry Maguire wasn’t able to result in a deal that suited both the player and the club, but in Mavropanos the Irons are getting a younger defender with international experience for a much smaller fee than what was reportedly required to secure Maguire.

West Ham

Technical director Tim Steidten only arrived at the London Stadium from the Bundesliga this summer so will know as well as anyone what qualities the defender will bring to Moyes’ side and this deal certainly appears to be one with his work all over it.

Maguire may have been Moyes’ priority at the back, but he will know as well as anyone that you can’t force a player to make a move that they aren’t interested in and with the end of the transfer window drawing closer the Irons can’t be picky and need bodies through the door.

In other West Ham news, the Irons remain interested in a Chelsea defender this summer
