Maxwel Cornet January exit mooted at West Ham United, sale could be a ‘massive’ financial loss

West Ham United attacker Maxwel Cornet could be sold in January for a “massive” financial loss if he doesn’t get the starting opportunities under David Moyes, according to Claret & Hugh.

The reliable Hammers journalists (16 November) believe that the Ivorian international deserves his chance to stake a claim to Moyes at the London Stadium but should that fail to happen, he could well be sold.

Claret & Hugh also shared via their website on 20 October that the Ivorian had been surplus to requirements at the club, having lost the faith of Moyes and there is the belief that any potential sale would be a “massive” loss on the £17.5m spent to sign him.

Opportunities unlikely

The 27-year-old arrived in East London to much fanfare and optimism, on the back of an impressive first season in the Premier League with the Clarets, where he registered nine goals and two assists in 28 appearances despite relegation.

But following a few outings off the bench for the Irons, he was struck down with an injury that kept him out all the way up until March to make it a difficult start for him at the London Stadium.

Since then, he’s become an unfortunate afterthought under Moyes’ management and has failed to take the opportunities presented to him.

He was given a rare start against Lincoln City in the EFL Cup back at the back end of September but desperately failed to take the opportunity against League One opposition.

As per Sofascore, Cornet lost possession of the ball on eight separate occasions during the game, failed to register a single key pass a single shot, completed just one of his crosses at a rate of 33% and barely touched the ball with just 29 touches, completing 85% of his passes.

He was deservedly hooked off after 66 minutes and it’s uncertain to determine when he could make another West Ham United start again under Moyes.

Certainly, the Ivorian could add so much in terms of his pace and directness on the counter in East London but it seems as though Moyes doesn’t trust him which means a January sale is all but certain right now.

In other West Ham news, the club’s stance on another potential signing has emerged with the deal still yet to be complete.
