Martin Keown baffled by Manuel Lanzini booking in West Ham v Dinamo Zagreb
Martin Keown was baffled by Manuel Lanzini’s yellow card in the first half of Dinamo Zagreb versus West Ham on Thursday night.
It was a strong first-half performance by the Hammers, who went ahead through Michail Antonio after a defensive mix-up by the hosts.
However, not long after, a challenge by Lanzini on Bruno Petkovic led to a bit of a minor scuffle that also included Declan Rice.
Kurt Zouma had to pull Rice away but Keown can’t understand why Lanzini was booked.
“It’s right in front of the referee,” Keown said on BT Sport 2 during the first half.
“You can see as he comes in, I think maybe the velocity of that challenge…is why he gets booked. It looks to me as if he just wins it fairly and then he’s fouled.”
Never a yellow
Lanzini shouldn’t be in the book.
He won the ball first when he went in for the challenge and it was hardly a dangerous one or anything like that.
Dinamo players clearly weren’t happy with it, which is what led to the scuffle but nothing really came of that either as experienced defender Zouma stepped in to pull Rice away on his Europa League group stage debut.
West Ham were the better team in that first half but they need to build on that one-goal lead in order to see the game out comfortably.
The longer it remains 1-0, the more Dinamo are going to push forward and potentially grow into the game.
Antonio’s goal was lucky but we need to show that we can create goals ourselves rather than rely on defensive mix-ups from the opposition.
In other West Ham news, violent clashes erupted in Zagreb before the game and a video has surfaced on Twitter to show that.
