Lucas Paqueta instantly reacts to FA charge after West Ham United incidents

Lucas Paqueta has responded after it was announced the West Ham star has been charged by The FA in regards to betting rule breaches.

According to Mike Keegan [23 May], the Brazilian midfielder has been charged with four counts of misconduct, with it being alleged that he bet on himself to be booked.

It is understood that these four cases took part in West Ham matches against Leicester City, Aston Villa Leeds United and Bournemouth in the Premier League.

Taking to X on Thursday (23 May), Paqueta said: “I am extremely surprised and upset that The FA has decided to charge me. For nine months, I have cooperated with every step of their investigation and provided all the information I can.

“I deny the charges in their entirety and will fight with every breath to clear my name. Due to the ongoing process, I will not be providing any further comment.”

Considering the lengthy ban that both Sandro Tonali and Ivan Toney were handed for their respective breaches, it could be a huge punishment for Paqueta if the charges are followed through with.

This would have a detrimental effect on the club itself, and also the player, given the amount of transfer rumours surrounding him this summer, especially Manchester City’s interest.

Man City were closing in on a deal for the 26-year-old last summer, having agreed personal terms with the player, but the deal stalled after reports of his betting allegations emerged.

Given the most recent update, it would be a surprise if the Premier League champions were to continue to target the Brazilian this summer, even despite Pep Guardiola being a huge fan.

Of course, Paqueta is innocent until proven guilty. His message released on social media seems to be filled with emotion after being charged by The FA and will be hoping to clear his name.
