Lucas Paqueta flops with 2/10, Jarrod Bowen best of bad bunch – West Ham player ratings v Tottenham
West Ham United returned from the October international break with a disappointing 4-1 defeat at the hands of Tottenham.
Julen Lopetegui’s side took an early lead in North London through Mohammed Kudus on Saturday (19 October), but Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs hit back four unanswered goals to claim all three points.
The defeat sees the Hammers slip to 14th in the Premier League table with only two wins from their opening eight Premier League games to increase the pressure on Lopetegui.
West Ham Zone has rated the players out of 10;
Alphonse Areola – 2
Would have been disappointed to not keep out Kulusevski’s leveller having got a big hand on the effort, but the Frenchman was unsighted. Similarly looked all over the place as he and Jean-Clair Todibo somehow combined to score an own goal. Once again his distribution left an awful lot to be desired as he repeatedly failed to pick out a teammate in claret and blue.
Emerson – 5
The best of a bad bunch in the backline on Saturday. Emerson worked incredibly hard to try and have an impact at both ends of the field and made some impressive tackles. The Italian left-back needed some help from his teammates.
Max Kilman – 5
After a solid first half which saw the former Wolves man deal with almost everything thrown at him, he and the rest of the Hammers’ defence looked all over the place in the second period. One or two reckless passes that put the Irons under pressure needlessly. Marginally better than Todibo next to him.
Jean-Clair Todibo – 3
Having put in a reasonably assured performance for much of the game, the Frenchman was unfortunate enough to score an own goal as he and Areola somehow turned home Son Heung-min’s strike. The South Korean skipper then left the Frenchman helpless with a good run and finish moments later. Todibo cost West Ham big money this summer and they need to see more from him.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 4
Was always going to be in for a tough afternoon as he faced off against Son Heung-min and it was exactly that. The Englishman made some huge tackles and interceptions but was caught napping as Son picked out Destiny Udogie for Spurs’ second goal. Was nowhere to be seen for the Spurs captain’s goal.
Guido Rodriguez – 5
Rodriguez hasn’t had the best of starts to life in claret and blue, but the World Cup winner impressed with his defensive work on Saturday afternoon. Made several big tackles to break up the home side’s promising attacks. Didn’t really do much in possession, however.
Tomas Soucek – 4
The Czech international was by no means the Hammers’ worst player on Saturday, but he was too slow in the middle of the park. Should have closed down Bissouma quicker for his goal. Ridiculous yellow card to pick up as he seemingly carried Brennan Johnson off of the field from the kick-off.
Mohammed Kudus – 5
Having been a constant livewire for the majority of the game, the Ghanaian international let himself down with a moment of madness late in the second half. On a bad afternoon for the Hammers, they didn’t need their only goalscorer sent off as well.
What happened to West Ham star Lucas Paqueta at the London Stadium?
Lucas Paqueta – 2
A really bad afternoon for the Brazilian. Twice lost possession under little pressure to kickstart moves that led to two goals for the home side. Picked up yet another needless booking and had little to no impact in possession. The Hammers need more from their star man who has not been at his best this term.

Jarrod Bowen – 6
The England international was as electric as ever down the right flank early in the first half but faded in the second half. Excellent pass to pick out Kudus for the Hammers’ opener as he showcased his ability in possession however, he also lost the ball in the build-up to Spurs’ fourth goal.
Michail Antonio – 5
As he so often is, the Jamaican international was left isolated at the top end of the field with very little to work with. He battled away as much as he could and did well with the scraps he was given. Very little blame can be levelled at him for that appalling second-half display.
Substitutes
Carlos Soler – 5
Edson Alvarez – 6
Crysencio Summerville – 6
Konstantinos Mavropanos – 6
