Ian Abrahams drops ‘absolutely lamentable’ West Ham United verdict after drawing Liverpool in EFL Cup

Ian Abrahams joked there is no point in West Ham travelling to Liverpool in the EFL Cup quarter-finals due to their poor record in the fixture.

West Ham produced a superb display to overcome Arsenal 3-1 in their last-16 tie at London Stadium and book their place in the next round.

However, they now face an even tougher assignment after being paired with Liverpool in a draw that took place late on Wednesday (1 November).

Reacting to the draw on talkSPORT Breakfast [2 November, 06:40], United fan Abrahams said: “What’s the point?

“Honestly, I’d love to know why it is that every single time West Ham [reach a quarter-final], it’s either Man United away, Man City away…

“Port Vale at home would have been lovely. Liverpool away – really? West Ham’s record at Liverpool is absolutely lamentable.”

Terrible record

West Ham would have happily accepted a quarter-final against either Everton, Fulham, Port Vale or Middlesbrough.

Two of those four sides are now guaranteed a spot in the semi-finals, whereas West Ham will have to do things the hard way.

Chelsea and Newcastle United would have provided tougher opposition, but Liverpool away was undoubtedly the most difficult draw possible for the Hammers.

West Ham

United have won just one of their past 15 matches against Liverpool – each of those meetings coming in the league – with the anomaly being a 3-2 victory in November 2021.

Not since August 2015, meanwhile, have the Irons picked up a victory at Anfield, while you have to go way back to 1963 for the most recent occasion they won on the red half of Merseyside prior to that.

Still, the away end will be packed out at Anfield next month in the hope of David Moyes’ men pulling off a shock result and reaching another cup semi-final. After all, it’s the hope that kills you.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers are reportedly considering a January move for an in-demand striker.
