Liam Gallagher slams ‘outrageous’ West Ham red card v Lyon

There was only one big talking point last night as West Ham were held to a 1-1 draw against Lyon in their Europa League quarter-final first leg.

Left-back Aaron Cresswell was sent off late into the first half as he was adjudged to have pulled back Moussa Dembele for the denial of a goal-scoring opportunity by referee Felix Zwayer.

Despite the French attacker heading closer to the corner flag than the goal and the fact that Cresswell appeared to make very little contact with him, there was no hesitation from the official to brandish the red card.

Music legend and avid Manchester City fan Liam Gallagher was watching the game and couldn’t resist taking to Twitter to give his opinion on the decision.

“Outrageous red,” is all he wrote in his first tweet before following it up with “It’s a free-kick and a cheeky nipple tickle that’s all.”

DO look back in anger

West Ham have every right to feel aggrieved at Zwayer’s decision because there is no universe in which an English official would have been so quick with his decision.

The quickfire way he brought out the red card is a prime example of referees not thinking when they make a decision nor consulting their assistant officials either.

The linesman will have had just as good a view as Zwayer did of the incident but the man in the middle not once even glanced in his direction and just acted upon pure instincts rather than giving himself time to think.

For all the grief supporters give English referees at times, they actually hold up very well against some of the continent’s best.

They are able to take other opinions than their own and even delay making a decision to try and be sure it is the right one rather than be the dictator of the game at every opportunity.

In other West Ham news, Jason Cundy was similarly outraged at the incident as he exploded live on talkSPORT.
