L’Equipe West Ham player ratings: Antonio superb, Johnson gets 5/10

French newspaper L’Equipe has rated West Ham players out of 10 after their 3-0 win versus Lyon in the Europa League on Thursday.

The Hammers secured their first European semi-final in 46 years, and they will face Eintracht Frankfurt in the last four.

L’Equipe was not impressed with both full-backs, as both Ben Johnson and Vladimir Coufal only managed 5/10, but they were heavily impressed with Craig Dawson.

Along with Dawson, the likes of Michail Antonio and Pablo Fornals also appeared to have impressed them as they got 8/10 each.

Declan Rice and Jarrod Bowen have managed 7/10, while Manuel Lanzini, Tomas Soucek, and Alphonse Areola have managed 6 out of 10.

Deserved

After being held 1-1 in the first leg, a big performance was needed away from home.

David Moyes’s side stood the early pressure from the home side before they got back into the game.

The visitors found a way to break the shackles. Craig Dawson met Pablo Fornals’ corner with a superb near-post header, and seven minutes later Declan Rice gave the Hammers a 2-0 lead with a deflected strike.

After the break, Jarrod Bowen added another scoring from a superb counter-attack leaving Lyon no chance of getting back into the game.

West Ham

They will now face German side Frankfurt who defeated Spanish giants Barcelona 3-2 at the Nou Camp to win 4-3 on aggregate.

This is indeed a statement victory, and David Moyes and his side can be really proud of what they have achieved this season.

The fact that the Hammers maintained a clean sheet in Europe despite missing the likes of Aaron Cresswell and Kurt Zouma, speaks volumes of their mental fortitude.
