Lee Clayton delivers verdict on West Ham defender Angelo Ogbonna’s injury
West Ham defender Angelo Ogbonna damaged his knee ligaments during Sunday’s Premier League win against Liverpool.
The centre-back is now set for an extended spell on the sidelines after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament.
West Ham earned a famous 3-2 win against Liverpool, but the injury to Ogbonna is a huge blow for the Hammers.

TalkSPORT journalist, Lee Clayton, has shared his opinion on Twitter after the news broke out. He has suggested that it’s “bad news” for the club. He has hailed the defender as an “absolute powerhouse”.
He wrote on Twitter: “Bad news for Ogbonna. Bad news for West Ham. Yes, there are alternatives. But he is a left footed CB, an absolute powerhouse in both boxes and another improving success under David Moyes. Hoping he gets back quickly. Bubbles bursting.”
Massive blow
The injury to Ogbonna is a massive blow for him and the club.
Clayton has rightly pointed out that he is a “powerhouse”, and while there are alternatives to replace him, the Hammers will lose a key component of their side.
The 33-year-old is a left-footed centre-back and he brings balance at the back alongside Kurt Zouma. He has made a fine start to the season, but it seems he may have just played his last game of the 2021-211 campaign, given the nature of the injury.
It will be interesting to see whether Ogbonna’s injury forces David Moyes to go out in the market and sign a defender, even on a short-term role.
Craig Dawson and Issa Diop are other options for Moyes alongside Zouma. The duo now needs to step up and fill the void left by Ogbonna.
West Ham need to maintain their momentum after the international break. They are third in the Premier League table, and are flying at the moment.
