Karen Carney: Declan Rice caught out for Brighton goal
West Ham continued their abysmal run against Brighton in the Premier League and Karen Carney believes Declan Rice cost his side points.
That is because Rice lost Percy Tau for the Brighton goal, with the attacking midfielder evading Rice’s attention before slipping a pass into Danny Welbeck to score.
Carney’s analysis on BBC’s Match of the Day showed that Tau cleverly peeled away from Rice without his knowledge, and when he picked up the ball seconds later there was nothing the England star could do to stop him.
Carney said, “He [Tau] just peels on the back shoulder of Declan Rice and Rice doesn’t know where he is, he’s kind of caught in no man’s land.
“Rice can’t do anything about it.”
Rare mistake
Rice is rarely at fault for a goal but here he failed to protect the back four, leading to a goal and ultimately costing us two valuable points.
We will not criticise the 22-year-old too much, however, as he has been outstanding this season.
Added to that, this was his first game back after missing six matches through injury, so he was always likely to be a little rusty.
We did not draw this game because of defensive weakness, rather, we did not show enough in attack.
Said Benrahma had to produce a moment of magic to claw back a point. Other than that we did not look like scoring.
The board is tp blame for that fact due to a refusal, once again, to spend money in January, despite selling Sebastien Haller.
Until we have good depth games like this are likely to happen, especially against Brighton – a team we still have not beaten in the Premier League.
In other West Ham news, a pundit has claimed David Moyes was raging at a West Ham star in 1-1 draw v Brighton.
