Kalvin Phillips flies back from Abu Dhabi on Tuesday in West Ham United transfer update

Kalvin Phillips has flown back to the UK from Abu Dhabi on Tuesday 23 January as he nears a loan move to West Ham, according to Manchester Evening News.

The website reported [23 January] that the Man City outcast will look to complete his move to London Stadium after travelling back with his teammates from warm-weather training.

It is understood, however, there is no rush to complete the deal, with West Ham’s exit from the FA Cup meaning that the Hammers have no match at the weekend.

Nearly there.

Phillips’ loan deal with West Ham seems to be inches away from being agreed and signed, which is good for all parties. The player gains valuable minutes ahead of Euro 2024, West Ham sign a brilliant player for the second half of the season, and Man City can clear their conscience.

Having signed for Man City from Leeds United for £45million, as per BBC Sport, it was expected that the 28-year-old would have a stellar career in the North of England. However, it has not worked out at all.

Even when Rodri has been unavailable, Pep Guardiola has preferred defensive duo John Stones and Rico Lewis, Mateo Kovacic or Manuel Akanji in midfield. Phillips has made just 31 appearances in City colours since July 2022.

Despite this, the midfield maestro has continued to perform at international level with England, as Gareth Southgate has not lost trust in him even though he has yet to start a Premier League game this season.

David Moyes should be excited at the prospect of a midfield partnership of Phillips and Edson Alvarez, allowing for the attacking players to leave their defensive responsibilities behind and focus on scoring goals.

In other West Ham news, the club are now the favourites to sign a striker who has netted nine times in an elite league this season.
