Julen Lopetegui sack whispers shared just before West Ham United vs Everton

BBC Sport commentator Steve Wilson said there were “whispers” Julen Lopetegui might be sacked as West Ham United manager prior to their Premier League clash with Everton.

It was reported by the Telegraph this week that the Hammers would retain faith in the Spaniard regardless of the outcome of Saturday’s (9 November) clash at the London Stadium.

Wilson, though, said there were rumblings that the indifferent Irons might pull the plug on his short tenure.

“It’s been a struggle for West Ham this season and Julen Lopetegui with the odd good result thrown in, he said on BBC Final Score (9 November).

“I’m not sure the fans are convinced about Lopetegui and there are whispers he may not survive a home defeat to Everton today. We shall see.”

West Ham are too inconsistent under Julen Lopetegui

Lopetegui has been able to pull a rabbit out of the hat when it really matters this season.

Before the October international break he was feeling the heat and his side managed to turn on the style in a 4-1 win over the Tractor Boys.

It was a similar scenario a couple of weeks ago when the pressure cooker was cranked up before facing Manchester United and his side managed to defeat the Red Devils 2-1, which coincidentally proved the final nail in the coffin of Erik ten Hag.

But, by and large, West Ham just have not been consistently good enough this season and, in truth, it is hard to say there has been a marked improvement in performances since the David Moyes days.

Having spent so big in the summer the pressure was always going on to deliver and you cannot say with a straight face that Lopetegui has delivered anything meaningful yet.
