Julen Lopetegui sack decision: Steinberg shares latest West Ham update

Julen Lopetegui will be given more time at West Ham United after the Liverpool loss, Jacob Steinberg says.

The Guardian journalist has revealed that the Hammers will not sack the Spanish manager after their 5-0 defeat to the Reds in the Premier League on Sunday (29 December).

Manchester City and Aston Villa are up next for a “really poor” West Ham side in the Premier League and the FA Cup, respectively.

Steinberg wrote on his personal X account (30 December): “Lopetegui to get more time after last night’s debacle against Liverpool. City away in the league and Villa away in the cup next for a really poor West Ham.”

David Sullivan should sack Julen Lopetegui at West Ham United after Liverpool loss

Lopetegui made his way to the London Stadium dugout with huge expectations after the departure of David Moyes.

Tim Steidten and the East London club’s recruitment team made some quality additions to the squad in the summer of 2024, and many expected the Hammers to challenge for a European spot.

The Spanish manager has failed to live up to the mark at the Irons, though, and his sacking seems inevitable after several poor performances this season.

West Ham have won just six matches in the English top flight in the current campaign and sit 13th in the table.

The East London club conceded three in the opening five minutes at home to Arne Slot’s team, and David Sullivan should’ve relieved the Spaniard of his duties in the tunnel after the game.

Lopetegui has shown little during his time at the London Stadium, and it remains to be seen how long the hierarchy will continue to support the former Wolves head coach.

In other West Ham news, Sullivan is at fault for what happened against Liverpool.
