Julen Lopetegui contract extension already mooted at West Ham United
Julen Lopetegui’s contract at West Ham is set to run until the end of June 2026 with a chance of an extension, according to Sean Whetstone.
The journalist reported via his West Ham Football X account [23 May] that his initial contract will run until the end of the 2025/26 campaign but qualifying for European competitions in his first two seasons in charge will trigger an automatic extension.
This extension would see Lopetegui’s contract run until the end of June 2027, seeing a third-year option in his deal triggered at the London Stadium.
“His initial contract is thought to run for two years until the end of June 2026 but if he qualifies for any European competitions in his first two seasons in charge it will automatically trigger a third-year option in his contract keeping him contracted until the end of June 2027,” he wrote.
West Ham United set expectations under Julen Lopetegui reign
The Hammers fans were extremely disappointed to have missed out on the European spots this season, having finished the season in ninth place, and rightly so.
David Moyes helped the club to compete in Europe, qualifying in three successive campaigns, a feat that was widely praised at the London Stadium.
However, having missed out on any type of European football for next season, having dropped out of the Europa League after the defeat to Bayer Leverkusen, the Irons are back to square one.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Lopetegui’s appointment this summer, his CV is extremely impressive, having experienced good spells with Real Madrid, Sevilla and the Spain national team before a short stay with Wolves in the Premier League.
The Spaniard worked wonders in his short time at Molineux Stadium, leading Wolves away from the dreaded relegation zone and up to the top half of the Premier League table.
West Ham fans will be hoping he can also do a decent job this time around, which would arguably deserve a contract extension and an extra year in London.
