Julen Lopetegui accused of seeking ‘massive payday’ at West Ham United as he’s slammed

Stan Collymore has slammed Julen Lopetegui and accused the manager of seeking a “massive payday” by joining West Ham.

Lopetegui has succeeded David Moyes at the London Stadium.

Writing in his column for CaughtOffisde (31 May), Collymore questioned Lopetegui’s loyalty and commitment to the Hammers.

“So the question is, what’s in it for him? A massive payday.

“Is he particularly loyal? Wolves fans will say no.

“If he has a good season and let’s say do what Villa did last season, does anybody honestly think that if Barcelona, Real Madrid or Bayern Munich came in for him that he’d still be at West Ham?”

Will Julen Lopetegui succeed with West Ham at the London Stadium?

In terms of his merit on the pitch, it would not yet be fair to pass judgement on Lopetegui.

People could draw off his previous experience and the football he has played at other clubs, but this is a new environment and a new set of players.

He will need time to make his mark.

But when it comes to his character, it would be completely fair for supporters to have doubts.

Lopetegui has had some big jobs throughout his career, but none where he has stuck around for a long time.

His stint as Real Madrid boss came and went, while his time with the likes of Porto, Sevilla and Spain weren’t much longer.

And West Ham fans won’t need any reminding of how his time with Wolves ended.

It is an unfortunate pattern which has emerged for the Argentine.

For now, the jury remains out on whether or not Lopetegui is the long-term answer to succeed Moyes.
