Journalist: West Ham United to make ‘major’ sack decision on David Moyes

West Ham have to make a major decision on whether or not to offer David Moyes a new contract, according to Dean Jones.

Speaking to GiveMeSport on Sunday (29 October), the former Eurosport journalist said the information he’s had is that the Hammers are “not going to rush” into handing the Scotsman a new deal at the London Stadium.

He admitted that it’s probably a “wise” decision from the Irons, but added that it limits what the club can do on the transfer front as they would have to align with what the 60-year-old wants to do in the second half of the season.

“There are some major decisions coming up for West Ham as they are going to have to make a decision on David Moyes and whether to offer a new contract and they also have to find a new option at number nine,” said Jones.

“The information I’ve had on Moyes is that West Ham are not going to rush into giving him a new deal. That’s probably wise but it also limits what they can do on the transfer front because they would have to align with what Moyes wants for the second half of the season and what Tim Steidten sees as the long-term future for the team.

“I think we will probably see Danny Ings moving on in the new year and there is also still doubt about what’s going on with Michail Antonio. The immediate aftermath of selling Declan Rice seemed calm but these major upcoming decisions will dictate where the team is heading.”

Future planning

Although Moyes is probably still reasonably safe for now despite a couple of disappointing results, there are no guarentees that he will be at West Ham beyond this season.

The club’s hierarchy don’t seem too keen to commit to a long-term contract, potentially disrupting any future planning they may want to make around the team.

The Scotsman does deserve time to turn things around after what he’s achieved over the past few years, but another abject season in the Premier League will not be acceptable.

With Steidten coming in as the technical director to oversee the Irons’ recruitment strategy, they are looking to bring in younger players that could have more value further down the line.

That is typically at odds with the type of player Moyes likes to add to his squad, so there is the potential for some misalignment once January comes around depending on what the strategy is at that point.

In other West Ham news, an £8million development has emerged in the club’s bid to sign Kalvin Phillips.
