Journalist: West Ham actively pursuing January deal for striker as news emerges
West Ham are in the market for another striker, with Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface and Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran on the transfer list, according the Alan Nixon.
The Sun journalist reported via his X account [24 January] that, with the hope of signing a striker in the January transfer window, the Hammers could revisit deals for the pair, having already seen an offer for Duran rejected.
It is understood that Boniface is West Ham’s main choice, a player who has scored 16 goals in 23 appearances since signing for the Bundesliga club in the summer.
“West Ham in market. Boniface first choice. Tried for Duran. May revisit both,” Nixon wrote.
Replacements needed
There is a real buzz around London Stadium this season, with the Irons currently sitting in sixth in the Premier League and advancing to the Europa League knockout stages.
And why wouldn’t there be a buzz? Well, West Ham’s recent injury struggles could be a reason why. David Moyes’ side have struggled since Lucas Paqueta and Jarrod Bowen both suffered injuries, adding to Michail Antonio already on the sidelines.
In addition to this, Mohammed Kudus has been unavailable due to being on international duty with Ghana at the 2023 African Cup of Nations. However, with Bowen’s injury not as bad as initially feared, and Kudus heading home, the squad is beginning to heal.
That said, there still seems to be a missing part of the jigsaw puzzle, with Moyes deploying Bowen as a striker instead of his natural winger position. Signing an out-and-out striker before the window closes on 1 February could take West Ham up that extra level ahead of a difficult second half of the season.
